Making Friends
Joe loved his friends
Joey truly loved, cherished, and built deep friendships, especially within the “special people” community. He found great joy in meeting with his mates and lady friends, and he remained in contact with many of his old school friends long after finishing at Mudgeeraba Special School.
Joey had a rare gift for connecting with people. He could strike up a conversation with almost anyone and always had kind words for strangers — especially if there was a dog nearby. His manner was genuine, respectful, and warm, and he showed a sincere interest in people’s lives and their stories.
When news of Joey leaving this mortal world first reached people, many contacted me with tears, condolences, and heartbreak. In those moments, I felt my heart break twice — first from the pain of losing my son, and then again as friends called me crying on the other end of the phone. I cried together with them.
Below, I have gathered as many photographs as I could of Joey and his friends sharing happy moments together — enjoying the beach, laughing, and simply stepping out to enjoy life.
